What are branched chain amino acids? The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are considered essential amino acids because human beings cannot produce these amino acids and must be present in the diet.
What foods contain the essential branched chain aminos? Dairy products and red meat contain the greatest amounts of BCAAs, although they are present in all protein-containing foods. Whey protein and egg protein supplements are other sources of BCAAs. BCAA supplements provide the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
Who use them as a supplement?
Some athletes say that branched-chain amino acids help improve strength training results, helps improve endurance.
What do the advocates say?
A good deal of research has been done on branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in athletes. BCAAs do not seem to enhance training benefits or exercise performance in most situations. Some athletes, however, may experience increased mental clarity during exercise or may be less susceptible to infections caused by the stress of exercise. Performance under extreme conditions, such as high altitude or heat, may also be improved with BCAAs.
What are the typical doses?
Some research has shown that supplemental BCAAs (typically 10 to 20 grams per day) do not result in meaningful changes in body composition,1 nor do they improve exercise performance or enhance the effects of physical training. However, BCAA supplementation may be useful in special situations, such as preventing muscle loss at high altitudes and prolonging endurance performance in the heat. One controlled study gave triathletes 6 grams per day of BCAA for one month before a competition, then 3 grams per day from the day of competition until a week following. Compared with a placebo, BCAAs restored depleted glutamine stores and immune factors that occur in elite athletes, and led to a reported one-third fewer symptoms of infection during the period of supplementation. Studies by one group of researchers suggest that BCAA supplementation may also improve exercise-induced declines in some aspects of mental functioning.
What are the possible side effects or interactions?
Side effects have not been reported with the use of BCAAs. People with kidney or liver disease should not consume high amounts of amino acids without consulting their doctor.
The breakdown of these amino acids starts with two common steps, catalyzed by enzyme complex capable of acting on all three amino acids: transamination by branched-chain amino acid aminotransferase, and oxidative decarboxylation by branched-chain ketoacid dehydrogenase. Isovaleryl-CoA is produced from leucine by these two reactions, alpha-methylbutyryl-CoA from isoleucine, and isobutyryl-CoA from valine.
Under fasting conditions, substantial amounts of all three amino acids are generated by protein breakdown. In muscle, the final products of leucine, isoleucine, and valine catabolism can be fully oxidized via the citric acid cycle; in liver they can be directed toward the synthesis of ketone bodies (acetoacetate and acetyl-CoA) and glucose (succinyl-CoA).
Severe single bouts of exercise and prolonged periods of heavy-duty training can increase the risk of illness in athletes. The mechanism underlying this has been hotly debated, with some scientists suggesting that the apparent immunosuppression associated with rugged exertion is linked with documented, training-induced decreases in levels of plasma glutamine. Blood concentrations of glutamine, an important substrate for cells of the immune system, can be increased by supplementing the diet with branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).
Recent study suggests that branched chain amino acids supplementation can reverse the reduction in plasma glutamine concentrations observed after prolonged intense exercise, improve immune responses during periods of strenuous exercise, and reduce the frequency of illness associated with hard training and competition.
