Summary:
A study following 185 overweight & obese children published in the journal Pediatrics shows promise for weight loss camps to help children lose weight.
The camp lasted about 1 month and used a holistic approach that integrated diet, exercise & lifestyle changes for the children who averaged a weight loss of 13 pounds.
The camp kids compared to other children who went about usual summertime routines not only lost weight, but reported improved fitness levels and sports skills and in general felt better about themselves.
Comment: It is difficult for parents to spend the time that structured camp programs can accomplish, but the main idea is to encourage kids to be more active, take part in activities they enjoy and feel good about making better food choices.
