Source: ESTROGEN DOESN'T PREVENT 2nd HEART ATTACK

    Summary:

  • Observational studies have noted that postmenopausal women taking estrogen have less heart disease than others
  • In a clinical, placebo-controlled study of women with existing heart disease, women taking hormone replacement therapy showed no difference in second heart attacks than others, but did have a higher incidence of gallbladder disease and blood clots
  • Women already taking HRT can continue, but it shouldn't be started for secondary prevention

    Comment:
Cardiac rehab and subsequent continuing exercise is still effective in preventing second heart attacks
