Most of us have found out the hard way that certain foods do not agree with us. Usually, our stomachs send us a message within a short time. Less obvious, and more controversial, is the role of food in contributing to chronic diseases. It is fairly well accepted that foods trigger migraines in some people. Now it seems there may be food triggers for some cases of rheumatoid arthritis.
Unlike osteoarthritis, which is associated with aging, rheumatoid arthritis can attack even young people. An autoimmune disease, it can range from one flare-up that never returns to chronic swelling and inflammation of the joints that cause considerable disability.
Foods to Watch
Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (www.pcrm.org)
has identified many cases from research in which rheumatoid arthritis patients were helped by eliminating certain foods from their diets. The most common arthritis triggers are dairy products; corn; meat (including chicken and fish); wheat, oats, rye; eggs; citrus fruits; potatoes; tomatoes; nuts; coffee. Pain-safe foods, which virtually never contribute to arthritis or other painful conditions, include brown rice; cooked or dried fruits (excluding citrus, bananas, peaches, and tomatoes); cooked green, yellow and orange vegetables; water; limited amounts of salt and maple sugar. The test is to eliminate all trigger foods while emphasizing pain-safe foods for 4 weeks. If there is no change in symptoms, food sensitivity is probably not the cause of the problem. If the patient feels better, he/she should start reintroducing the trigger foods one at a time in fairly large amounts to see which one(s) cause or aggravate the symptoms. Check with your doctor before trying this.
