Summary:
Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured after 1 year weight loss by calorie restriction, weight loss by exercise, or control groups
Both intervention groups lost similar amounts of weight
Compared to controls, calorie restriction group showed reduced BMD at 3 sites on body, but exercise group did not have decreased BMD at any site
Conclusion: Calorie-reduction weight loss is associated with reduced BMD but exercise-induced weight loss is not
