Summary:
A study at Massachusetts General Hospital found 1 in 3 people taking the
recommended amount of Vitamin D were still deficient in the substance
Recommendations assume some Vitamin D will be synthesized by the skin in
response to sunlight, but skin becomes less efficient at this with age.
People in the northern third of the country cannot get enough sun during
the winter to manufacture Vitamin D
Conclusion:
People over 50 should get 10-15 minutes of sun before applying
sunscreen, and consider taking a supplement with 400 IU of D (but never
more than 2000 units from all sources, including milk)
