Source: Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise
Summary:
Overweight men were assigned to control or diet only (D), diet and aerobic exercise (DE), or diet, aerobic exercise, and strength training (DES) groups
All diet groups reduced body mass similarly but D lost 69% as fat, DE 78%, and DES 97%
DE increased aerobic capacity; DES increased aerobic capacity, although somewhat less, and also increased strength
Conclusion: Adding aerobic and strength exercise to a diet regimen preserves lean tissue when weight is lost while increasing aerobic capacity and muscular strength
