Summary:
The FDA has approved sibutramine (Meridia) for the treatment of obesity
In 1-year trials with the drug, people lost on average 10 or 14 pounds,
depending on dosage
Common side effects were headache, constipation, and insomnia, and
increases in blood pressure and heart rate in a few people
Comment:
This drug may help a few obese people who need to lose weight for
medical reasons, but it is not intended for cosmetic weight loss. (If you
eat right and work out you won't need to fill your body with toxic chemicals.)
