  • Researchers tested young and elderly men and women of similar activity level regarding muscle size, strength, and activation of ankle dorsiflexors
  • Men had higher muscle strength and size than women, young men had higher isometric strength than elderly but young and older women were similar, and muscle size was greater in younger subjects
  • Foot tap speed was faster in young than elderly subjects

    Conclusion:
    Isometric specific strength is unimpaired by aging but the ability to perform rapid repetitive muscle contractions declines with age
