Researchers examined the effect of a program to produce modest weight loss by reducing dietary fat and increasing activity on bone mineral density (BMD) in 236 healthy premenopausal women age 44-50
Over 18 months the intervention group lost 3.2+/-4.7 kg vs. weight gain of 0.42+/-3.6 kg in control group, but the intervention group showed greater loss of BMD at the hip and spine
Large increases in physical activity attenuated spine BMD loss but did not affect BMD loss at hip
