    More Intense Activity Beneficial

    Source: Stone Hearth

    Summary:

  • Participants with no history of cancer were given a leisure time activity questionnaire and followed for 16 years
  • Men with activity intensity of over 5.2 metabolic equivalents (METs) had lower cancer mortality than those with mean activity intensity of 3.7 METs, all based on exercise of at least 30 min/day on average
  • Higher physical activity intensity was associated with lower risk of death from cancer in the study in British J. Sports Medicine

Comment: 5.5 METs is a walking speed of 17 minutes per mile; 3.5 METs would be 1 mile in 24 minutes, or similar intensity for activity other than walking
