    Muscle Fitness Slows Weight Gain

Source: Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

    Summary:

  • Canadian researchers examined the association between musculoskeletal fitness (MSF) and weight gain
  • 606 participants were assessed in 1981 and then followed up by questionnaire in 2002-04 for height and weight
  • Prevalence of obesity increased from 3.1 to 15.2%, but low MSF was associated with higher odds of having gained at least 10 kg (22 lb) during follow-up period

Conclusion: Improving musculo-skeletal fitness may help attenuate age related weight gain and prevent obesity
