    New Mothers Need Sleep

    Source: UPI

    Summary:

  • Mothers who sleep no more than 5 hours a day when babies are 6 months old are 3 times as likely to retain at least 11 lb 6 months later than those who sleep 7 hours
  • Sleep deprivation has been associated with weight gain in the general population, and now it is seen to affect postpartum weight retention, according to a study in Am. J. Epidemiology
  • Getting an extra 2 hours sleep could be as important as healthy diet and exercise to return these new mothers to pre-pregnancy weight

Comment: This study of new mothers adds to the data linking lack of sleep with obesity
