Subjects, average age 69, with knee osteoarthritis were assigned to strength training or flexibility groups, in a study in Arthritis Care & Research
Strength training included leg press, leg curl, chest press, seated row, 3 sets of 8-12, later transitioning to home exercises of wall squats, wall pushups, and leg curls
Both groups lost leg strength over 30 months, but rate of loss was slower in strength training group, who also showed slower progression of arthritis
Conclusion: Strength training is an effective treatment for knee arthritis
