Summary:
The B vitamins folate and B12 are thought to lower the risk of heart
disease by lowering the blood level of homocysteine
A new study indicates that homocysteine may also be involved in
Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's patients had much lower blood levels of folate and B12 than
people with normal brain function, but it is unclear whether this is a cause
or an effect of the disease
Conclusion:
People in their 50s and 60s may want to play safe by
emphasizing adequate amounts of folate (400 mcg/day recommended) and B12
(2-4 mcg/day) through food and/or supplements
