    B-VITAMIN DEFICIT LINKED TO ALZHEIMER's

Source: Tufts Health and Nutrition Letter

    Summary:

  • The B vitamins folate and B12 are thought to lower the risk of heart disease by lowering the blood level of homocysteine
  • A new study indicates that homocysteine may also be involved in Alzheimer's Disease
  • Alzheimer's patients had much lower blood levels of folate and B12 than people with normal brain function, but it is unclear whether this is a cause or an effect of the disease

    Conclusion:
People in their 50s and 60s may want to play safe by emphasizing adequate amounts of folate (400 mcg/day recommended) and B12 (2-4 mcg/day) through food and/or supplements
