    Summary:

  • Analysis of walking distance for over 27,000 women showed greatest reduction in body mass index, intermediate for waist circumference, and least for hip and chest circumference
  • Decline in adiposity per kilometer walked was greatest in overweight, sedentary women and least in lean, active women
  • Decline in body mass index in walkers was more than previously reported in runners, probably because runners were leaner to start with

    Conclusion: Most weight loss benefit of walking per kilometer is seen in the most obese subjects, though lean women get other benefits from walking
