Summary:
A recent study shows people over 65 with low blood levels of vitamin D were 3 times more likely to have to enter a nursing home than those with high levels
Vitamin D keeps bones and muscles strong and helps prevent falls
Government recommendations for vitamin D are 400 IU a day for people age 50-70 and 600 IU over 70, but Wellness Letter advises 800-1000 IU if you’re over 60
Comment: Sunlight is also a significant source for vitamin D for those who can absorb it, and so can also help people maintain independence and avoid nursing homes
