    Muscle Lost After Bed Rest

  • 12 healthy adults average age 67 volunteered for a study involving 10 days of bed rest
  • After bed rest, there was a significant decrease in muscle protein synthesis, whole body lean mass, and strength, but no significant change in body fat
  • Bed rest resulted in a large loss of skeletal muscle

    Comment: The study goal was to examine bed rest in relation to hospitalization, but one might wonder about the effects of short-term illness or even extreme sedentary lifestyle
