Source: Journal of Applied Physiology
Summary:
Male and female subjects cycled 2 hours at 40% of maximum oxygen
uptake and spent the next 2 hours as recovery
Women derived proportionally more energy from fat oxidation and men
from carbohydrate during exercise only, not during recovery
The hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine were slightly higher in
the males
Conclusion:
Women may be more sensitive to the fat burning effects of
these hormones
Comment:
At 50 vs 43% for women and 45 vs 53% for men, fat and
carbohydrate use were close at this rather low exercise intensity
