    Summary:

  • Male and female subjects cycled 2 hours at 40% of maximum oxygen uptake and spent the next 2 hours as recovery
  • Women derived proportionally more energy from fat oxidation and men from carbohydrate during exercise only, not during recovery
  • The hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine were slightly higher in the males

    Conclusion:
    Women may be more sensitive to the fat burning effects of these hormones
    Comment:
    At 50 vs 43% for women and 45 vs 53% for men, fat and carbohydrate use were close at this rather low exercise intensity
