In 2004, 15,086 people underwent the surgery with a death rate of 0.2 percent with 85.2 percent aged 18-54 with another 349 performed on those aged 12-17.
After adjusting for inflation, the average hospital cost went from $10,970 (1998) to $10,395 in 2004.
Conclusion: As the procedure becomes less dangerous and obesity occurrence continues to rise the bariatric surgery option will be increasingly offered by physicians. The report is published online at http://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/reports/statbriefs/sb23.pdf.
