Summary:
Over 76,000 study participants were studied and 429 women were diagnosed with glaucoma, an
eye condition that can lead to blindness and is characterized by increased internal eye pressure.
After adjusting for possible risks including weight, physical activity & age the researchers
found that having type 2 diabetes was associated with an 82% increased risk for developing the
disease and was even higher for women.
The study lasted from 1980 to 2000 and covered women who were at least 40 years old and were
free of glaucoma when the study began.
Comment: Type 2 diabetes is fueled by obesity and this study suggests that factors
other than lifestyle behavior contribute to insulin resistance which could lead to glaucoma.
