Summary:
According to a report released at a conference sponsored by the American Cancer Society,
about 12 percent of women worldwide smoke and that number is expected to increase to 20 percent by
2025.
The same report predicted that the number of men smoking worldwide is expected to decrease
from the current 48 percent while women increase lighting up while advertisements gear toward that
population.
Advertisements on billboards are banned in the US, but it is common for attractive,
modern-looking women to be depicted overseas on billboards.
Comment: According to experts, the tobacco industry is increasingly marketing to
females in developing countries very similar to what they did in the 1960's & 70's.
