Summary:
Current dietary guidelines recommend dietary fat to an
upper limit of 30% of total daily caloric intake.
These guidelines do not specify a lower
limit on fat intake since assessing
the effect of the very low fat diet (
defined as one in which 15% of total calories are
derived from fat) is difficult.
Newer fat-free and low-fat food alternatives have shown
controversial effects of lowering total caloric intake as
it is often noted that more food is consumed when these lower fat foods
are consumed.
Conclusion:
With proper food choices, essential fatty acids can be adequately
derived from unsaturated sources even if total fat intake is
less than 15% of calories. (Very low fat diets should
be avoided by growing children, pregnant women, lactating women, and
the elderly)
