Summary:
Sedentary adults were assigned to 30 minutes of walking in one of 4 conditions: (1) moderate intensity(I), low frequency(F); (2) mod. I, high F, (3) hard I, low F, (4) hard I, high F
At 6 mo. All but group 1 showed increased maximum oxygen consumption compared to a group given only physician advice
At 24 mo. All 3 groups maintained maximum oxygen consumption significantly higher than baseline
Conclusion: Walking at hard I or high F resulted in long-term improvement in cardiovascular fitness, with indications that more exercise of hard I and high F might yield more benefits
Note: high F was 5 day/wk, low F was 3-4 days/wk
