    Whole Grains Slow Plaque Build-up

Source: Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter

    Summary:

  • Researchers studied postmenopausal women who had coronary-artery blockages of at least 30%
  • Subjects were examined at baseline and after 3.2 years
  • Progression of plaque build-up was less in women who reported eating over 3 grams of cereal fiber or more than 6 servings of whole grains/week

Conclusion: Cereal fiber and whole grain intake may slow progression of plaque in heart disease patients, and benefits probably also accrue to general population
