Increasing calcium intake for pregnant women may help prevent complications from a condition know as preeclampsia which affects about 9 percent of pregnancies worldwide.
Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition, which a woman's blood pressure raises dramatically and a recent study revealed that pregnant women with low dietary calcium might be helped.
1.5 grams of calcium supplementation lowered hypertension, lessened newborn deaths and decreased the risk of preterm delivery for women who took calcium compared to those in the placebo group.
Conclusion: Calcium deficiency is a greater problem outside of the US, but doctors should urge pregnant patients to be sure to get the recommended calcium levels.
