In a study of 55,000 middle aged Swedish women published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, vegetarians were compared against meat eaters

Vegetarians were about half as likely to be overweight as those who ate meat

Results were true of lacto-ovo vegetarians as well as vegans
