Summary:
People have been supplementing their diet with folic acid and B Vitamins to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
2 New studies reported in the New England Journal of Medicine show that reducing homocysteine levels through supplementation may have no effect on preventing heart attacks.
The 2 studies, (NORVIT) 3,749 participants over 3 years and (HOPE) had over 5,500 patients over 5 years did show significant homocysteine levels were lowered.
Comment: The NORVIT study did however show that combination vitamin therapies did note a decrease in stroke risk after supplementation.
