Summary:
Report from the Annals of Surgery show patients who underwent stomach bypass had increased levels of two hormones, PYY and GLP-1 and had changes in their insulin response.
These hormones are expected to produce sensations of fullness after eating and the insulin response changes would be expected to lead to improved blood sugar levels.
Authors of the study point out that those who had comparable weight loss through gastric banding where the stomach is restricted not bypassed, did not show the hormonal changes.
Comment:: The size of the stomach changes and it expands as food intake is increased that can take place over years. With each of us being different, appetite can also be reversed somewhat through eating behavior modification that does not require surgeries that are years away from long-term effectiveness.
