Summary:
Recent Chicago Tribune article has alerted readers that cans of light tuna which generally contain skipjack tuna, also
include yellow fin tuna and the labels on the cans do not mention that.
The FDA has advised that certain at-risk people eat albacore sparingly as they have elevated levels of mercury and
yellow fin is similar to albacore in mercury levels.
High mercury levels are linked to learning disabilities, developmental delays in children and to heart, nervous system
and kidney damage in adults.
Conclusion: Young children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age should eat no more than one meal per
week of canned tuna, especially yellow fin or albacore.
