We hear a lot about the problems of obesity in teenagers, as well as the problems associated with teens who don’t finish school. Here’s a solution to both problems: have them run a marathon.
Students Run LA is a program that has done this successfully since 1986. A continuation school teacher ran a marathon and felt so good about it he challenged his students—who were considered misfits and underachievers—to train with him for the next one. Not only did they finish the race, they went on to graduate high school, go to college, and get jobs. Since then, thousands of students have completed the program. Over 90% of those who enter finish the race, and they go on to graduate at a higher rate than average.
The program is for at-risk students, and is supported by donations. The students don’t have to pay for their own gear or entry fees. The community contributes, including several big corporate sponsors. The mentors, mostly teachers, are volunteers. But it’s the kids that have to do the real work. They come out of it with improved health and fitness, enhanced self-esteem, and benefits of goal setting and character enhancement. This is a program everybody in the community can be proud of.
