This is about health, fitness and safety. Let me first begin with the statement that streets are for vehicles, whether that be a car, bike or other mechanically powered transportation means. Pedestrians are provided sidewalks and paths to get from point A to point B.
This seems all to obvious for most adults, but as people are encouraged to get out and start walking as part of a more active lifestyle, it becomes more apparent that we must be reminded. People do not belong on the road whether walking, jogging or creeping along at a snail’s pace while crossing between 2 white lines.
The more time you spend on a street, the more likely you will be hit. Those white lines are paint and not some magic protective barrier between you and thousands of pounds of metal, rubber and glass. If you are struck by a vehicle, you may be killed or severely injured. Sure you may have a good case for a lawsuit, but at what expense? Will a little money in your pocket make up for being maimed or in pain for the rest of your life?
Follow thes tips for making your walk or jog safer for you and less of an issue for drivers:
1. Wear some color on your upper body.
2. Only cross at designated crosswalks.
3. Come to a complete stop before crossing.
4. Look both ways prior to and during your crossing.
5. If there is a center divider, repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. Move briskly while on the street.
The crosswalk is not your time to shine or test your faith in humanity or a higher being. Enjoy getting outdoors and being active without being a burden to yourself or traffic.
Remember, YOU have the POWER!
