    Holiday Weight Gain...Now What?

    By: Darren Rieck

It happens every year as the changing weather reminds people that the holiday season is just around the corner and the parties begin. The media's message is: "Don't overeat this time!"

There are many ways to avoid gaining weight during this festive season. The easiest concept is to forget all of the tasty holiday treats that are so readily available at parties and dinners. Right.

Now for some more realistic methods for staying healthy through the holidays.

    1. Enjoy yourself. Don't be so uptight about gaining some weight during the holidays. This is traditionally the biggest party time of the year, and, as humans, we need to enjoy ourselves. If you overeat or eat too much of something, simply take it in stride and spend a little more time on the treadmill on your next workout. Also, keep in mind that reports have shown that holiday weight gain is less than previously thought.
    2. Be sure to keep your workout schedule as close to normal as possible, and try to squeeze in a shorter workout instead of missing it altogether.
    3. Prepare for an upcoming dinner party by adding some time to each workout the week (s) prior. Perhaps even not giving yourself your normal treats for a couple weeks, allowing you to feel free to indulge during the event.
    4. If you are hosting the party, be sure to give as many healthy alternatives as possible so those who are being restrictive can indulge as well.

There are many other things that can be done to make this holiday season a healthy one, but remember to have fun and enjoy yourself while being safe. The following articles have previously been published on this website and are good references.
