Total Gym

Review by Joann Bally CSCS

Total Gym has models for health clubs and rehab facilities, and has sold lots of home machines. This is a strength training machine that uses your body weight for resistance. You sit or lie on a flat, padded board and increase resistance by increasing the slant. You move the handles in different directions and the board slides up and down. It feels like you’re participating more than with some other machines that do most of the work for you. It’s hard to isolate muscles, but that’s ok. There is a limit of 50 or 60% of your body weight that can be used unless you buy attachments. Total Gym is better for upper body than lower body development. If you use the foot plate for squats, you can do one leg at a time to make it harder. You won’t get huge with the Total Gym but can increase strength and muscle tone. Body weight exercise like this may be helpful for athletes who need speed and agility like martial artists, skaters, or gymnasts.
