Jam Gym

Review by Joann Bally CSCS

Resistance bands are popular. They have good uses for rehab and to train some sports movements. And, of course, they are the most portable of exercise devices. They are often suggested for elderly or very deconditioned individuals who may be uncomfortable with free weights or weight machines. Still, this should not be your principal method of strength training because the resistance is applied quite differently than in normal motion. For instance, if you do a dumbbell biceps curl, the movement is difficult to start, then gets harder through the first part, but easier toward the end. The band is loose at the beginning and hardest at the end of the movement. To train full range of motion on many movements would require doing several partials and constantly changing resistance bands. Another drawback is that you can’t really judge your progress with bands, as you can when you are able to use a heavier dumbbell or the next weight plate. Bands are better for upper body training. It’s hard to get a good leg workout with most bands. There are resistance bands that are strong enough for heavy squats, but these are expensive and not readily available. Bands come in different resistances, usually color coded. They are a good, inexpensive supplement to your workout equipment. Order Here
