If you are doing heart rate training, a heart rate monitor is a good thing to have. Heart rate training is when you try to work out at a certain percentage of your maximum heart rate, which can be from 55-90%, depending on your fitness level and goals. Runners are most likely to do heart rate training, though it lends itself to other aerobic activities as well. Heart rate is often checked in aerobics classes. The monitor keeps you from having to check your pulse all the time. It’s also more accurate in most cases, as people often have trouble taking their own pulse. The device usually, but not always, has a chest strap, and a wrist monitor. The wrist monitor also has time-of-day, stopwatch, and other chronograph functions. Some models have advanced features like alarms, lap counters, progress monitors, and beeps along with your pace. There is a wide price range, so do your research. Polar is the best known brand.
