Cardio Wave

Review by Joann Bally CSCS

At first glance the Cardio Wave looks like an elliptical trainer, but it isn’t. It doesn’t feel like it, either. The movement is back and to the side, not straight back and egg-shaped. More like a skating movement, but not exactly. The manufacturer describes it as multiplanar, rather than single plane, which is going to involve more muscles. Using more muscles should help make your joints more stable, both on and off the machine. The Cardio Wave is very smooth, weight bearing but non-impact. Is it more fun than other cardio equipment? I didn’t use it very long, but I did enjoy the ride. I look for these to appear in new gyms or those who want to upgrade. (Gym owners: it’s smaller than an elliptical.) Technogym says there was the treadmill in the 60s, the bike in the 70s, the stepper in the 80s, the elliptical in the 90s—and the Wave will be the cardio machine of this decade. Maybe they’re right.
