Yes, you read that correctly. Without keeping up with the latest health & fitness fads, I'm not quite sure it has become a trend yet, but this one will surely take off if it hasn't already. .
Now introducing for the first time (here at least) the all new "Trash Workout"...available everywhere!
Here's what happened
On my regular weekend bike adventure, I noticed something that I think could immediately impact improving the environment locally, while at the same time increasing your fitness, health and well-being. And, I must also mention, the price is right--Free!
I observed this lady, methodically bending down, exhaling to pick up some trash and then tossing it in her bag. Upon bending back up, she inhaled as she continued her path toward wherever she was headed with the same fate awaiting the next trash encountered. I imagined that this lady was out last week during the Earth Day celebration and was included in a group of people celebrating the day by picking up trash at the beach, which happens regularly.
To me, earth day is a daily event that is constantly celebrated and given due respect, but thanks to somebody or some group, there exists a day set aside for this recognition. My guess is that she was struck by the idea that she could go to the beach anytime and use the method of bending down to pick up trash as part of her workout while she does a good thing for the earth and all of us who depend upon it.
Now, imagine yourself out on the beach on a beautiful sunny (or sometimes overcast) day getting outdoors in the sunshine with ocean breezes and with others enjoying Southern California picking up trash and getting your workout in...all at the same time!
That’s right, deep knee bend (pick up gum wrapper), lunge forward (pick up candy wrapper), raise up on tip toes then exhale, bend down and pick up that fast food bag! You are fully multi-tasking, and everyone benefits. Then I realized that this doesn't have to be just at the beach.
Start today! Join the growing crowds that are overtaking neighborhoods across the United States. Be the first on your block as spaces are being filled fast and the participants appear to be extremely territorial. Get out there and claim your block for your Trash Workouts!
Remember, YOU have the POWER!
