If you are fed up with hearing about the status of beef and farm animals an ocean away, you have joined a small crowd.
Americans really are interested in how this may affect them and if so, how devastating or how much of a personal
impact there may be.
Taking heed to the alarm of mad cow disease (BSE) or recent outbreaks of Foot & Mouth (FMD) affecting farm animals
in Europe only makes sense. As we become increasingly global and the threat of these or other new diseases
become more evident, our current farming practices and the mass processing of meat has changed the magnitude of
how such an event would play out.
What may be even more important to your health is often overlooked in the media as networks try to protect
advertising dollars derived from the many fast food & grocery chains advertising during their programming.
Prevention is the real solution.
Taking immediate steps to evaluate standards of practice from:
Industrial plants that house vats that mix meat from hundreds of cows together for fast-food bound hamburger.
Making a concerted effort to minimize/eliminate the use of hormones for reducing stress that is due to living in tight
quarters.
And those used to increase milk production & speed growth.
Consider the transportation and herding practices of the animals prior to being slaughtered.
Thinking that we are isolated from these diseases and can protect our interests by washing shoes at airports will make
us look like utter fools when the first outbreak in the US becomes more than a threat, but a real crisis.
You can wait until something happens or until experts find that some new disease has been harboring itself in the food
chain or you can start today by being more selective. Choosing more organic or organically raised foods is probably a
good first step.
No matter when you decide to start monitoring the trails of what you eat, at least for now you do have a choice. (Originally Published FEB 2001)
