Saving at the Pump
By now you have heard about how high gas prices have forced many people to evaluate how much they use their cars and looking for alternatives to driving so much. Some people are even purchasing vehicles that get higher gas mileage or don't use gasoline at all. While purchasing a higher mileage vehicle is a great idea, it is not in everyone’s budget, and that doesn't get to the heart of the problem.
From a global & individual health perspective, we need to use vehicles less often. Short-term benefits will be directly affecting your bottom-line, both financially and figuratively. Every attempt to use your vehicle less will improve your health, albeit some changes will offer greater opportunities than others.
Keep the following in mind when deciding how you can use less gasoline in your daily life. In the long-term, making these adjustments will improve your health and well-being as well as help to lessen our consumption of oil. Think about your plan as a reasonable approach that you can stick with even if the price at the pump were lower.
Replace car use with walking/biking or both (even if just 1 day each week).
Use public transportation more often.
Car pool with others (again, even if just once a week)
Plan errands better so you take care of multiple tasks while out.
When you drive, slow down & stick to the speed limit (less waste & less stress!).
Keep your car tuned-up and keep proper air levels in the tires.
And when you do have to drive, keep these tips in mind when fueling-up:
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold.
When you're filling up, do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle completely as this puts the flow into fast mode. Notice that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high...and using low decreases vapor loss.
Don't wait until your gas tank is half empty before filling up.
If there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up at that time.
Remember, YOU have the POWER!
