It is the changes in lifestyle as we age (job, family, etc.) that do more to slow down our body, rather than age itself. I was in the best condition of my life in my thirities, because I trained every day.
Business and family have reduced the time available to make up for bad habits, so I must now watch what I eat very carefully, and get exercise in whenever I can.
One key to success for you will be to not be so concerned with weight, but to do the things that you know are right to do, regardless of the short term feedback you look for.
Adding some muscle, through lifting weights, is contrary to most women's idea of the "perfect" physique. They think that they will "bulk up". In reality, adding muscle will actually help you reduce fat in the long run, since muscle requires to be fed 24 hours per day. This means that your resting metabolim increases as you add muscle.
I encourage you to look through this forum and other places to see what other people have done. One precaution; don't buy into the ads in magazines, touting the wonderful success with one product. The changes always come from consistency and discipline.
The key elements to a good fitness program are; working out every day possible, making the activity something you enjoy doing, eating small meals frequently, and cutting out as many bad habits as possible (not necessarily all at once).
Good luck.
