There are almost no side effects to creatine if used properly. That last phase is the key. The horror stories you hear about are more from ignorance and/or stupidity. The problem is people would rather blame the creatine than themselves.

Here are some tips:
1. Do not do the loading phase - it's a marketing scam by creatine manufacturers to sell more product. It is NOT needed. Start with the maintenance dose and stick with that. (This loading phase is where the number one side effect occurs, which is bloating/GI problems)
2. Drink at least a gallon of water per day.
3. Lift harder. The creatine allows you to lift harder than you can without it and that is its only benefit. If you keep lifting in the same manner the creatine will not help you.
