I actually find that I can get stronger, faster at 44 than I did at 20.
I can lift more, and get better definition for many reasons; the biggest being that I lift smarter now.
Of course there is one big negative factor to being older; recovery time. You get more sore, and need more recovery time between sessions.
Start slow, and build up. You'll find that you will progress steadily.
