The recommended minimum and maximum protein intake is 1/2 gram to 1 gram per pound of body weight, per day. This includes all sources of protein, both regular foods and supplements, not just supplements. Don't take 200 grams of whey protein to get to the maximum number.
There is nothing that I know of that would cause anyone to stay away from whey protein. Any reports about kidney failure would be directly related to either excessive protein intake and/or inadequate water intake. Osteoporosis? Only if you are not getting enough calcium from your diet, and are trying to get all of your protein from powders. I would be interested to find out your source of this claim.
