The exercises (pushups, etc) you do to get stronger tear down muscle fibers. When your body repairs them, that is when you get stronger.
This is antagonistic to retaining flexibility. This is why stretching is so important.
You need to think of both; exercise to stress the muscle, and then stretching to regain the flexibility afterward.
You need both. One activity won't do both, with the exceptions of maybe yoga and pilates.
