You might want to consider investing in some time with a personal trainer with an emphasis on weight training. They should be able (if they're doing their job) to get you comfortable with how to properly use free weights or machines and help you develop a routine at home. They should also be able to provide you with some idea as to the equipment that you should buy. If you don't know what you're doing and don't have a planned program, I think you will be likely to give up too easily. I worked with a trainer when I knew nothing and now feel very comfortable around a gym and get good results from my routine. Good luck
