Just out of curiosity, where were you taught that? I ask because everything I have been taught says that the 4-6 range is great for building strength but that the primary adaptation to that style of training is neurological and not so much hypertrophy. My sources for this information are Charles Poliquin, Ian King, and the NSCA. From those sources and others, I gather that the ideal rep range for hypertrophy is roughly 8-12. Here are two of the references involved:

Stone, M.H., et al. A hypothetical model for strength training. Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. 21:342-351. 1981.

Tesch, P.A., L. Larsson. Muscle Hypertrophy in Bodybuilders. European Journal of Applied Physiology. 49:310. 1982.
