Get used to it...your local store is going to charge for your bags if you do not have your own! This is an incredible savings of money and the environment that will have a global impact...and the U.S. is slow on this one. For years many stores in Europe have expected consumers to bring shopping bags. Look for most US stores to implement a program by 2010.
Ask your local grocers if they have a shopping bag plan. Paper or plastic?...try to use neither. Organic hemp and/or cotton bags make the most sense since they are stronger, longer lasting and can be readily toted. Get a bag and personalize the message on it for you or your family...or put your business logo on it.
When out and about, keep a bag in the car, and when at restaurants, eat more there and take home less. Unnecessary extra plastic utensils, napkins and other to-go bag stuffers can be refused or given back. Carrying the container and not using a plastic bag saves on plastic use. If you go to the eatery regularly, ask the proprietor to make the switch to be more ecological with their business practices.
