Individual bottled water products should be avoided, especially those that do not contain 1 gallon or more. Instead, refill re-usable bottles with filtered water for about-town trips or consider buying a light weight metal container first, and if you do decide to buy plastic, purchase 100% vegetable-based plastics.
Both vegetable & petroleum-based plastics require a great deal of energy to produce, and the costs for transporting them are even higher. The worst part about the life of the bottles, if they were not tossed on the ground, is that, when people toss them into the trash, they end up in landfills instead of being recycled into another product. Also plastic bottles break down, and some of the chemicals can leach into the product being stored. And not just for your own health, but petroleum-based plastic takes about 1,000 years to break down on its own. Unless it was burned (yikes!), every plastic item ever made by man is still somewhere on this planet.
So, if you do use plastic containers, be sure to choose vegetable-based plastic and recycle it.
